Subject: Ghostscript 2.6.1 upload
Keith,
I have uploaded to Simtel 20:
<msdos.postscript>
gs261ini.zip required files plus examples for gs ver 2.6.1
gs261286.zip gs v2.6.1 exe for 286 machines
gs261386.zip gs v2.6.1 exe with extend. mem for 386/486s
gs261win.zip gs v2.6.1 exe for windows
This is essentially the same as the 2.6.1 bug official
release on prep.ai.mit.edt/pub/gnu, packaged into smaller zip files,
with the addition of the following files:
readme.1st this file
packing.lst what files are in what zip
use.ps use.doc in postscript form
gs2.bat sample screen view bat file for gs, tsing video
gs3.bat sample screen view bat file for gs386, tsing video
You must get gs261ini.zip and one of the other .zip files,
depending on target machine. 386/486 users should definitely get
gs261386.zip.
The 2.4, 2.5 fonts can be used with 2.6 and some new fonts
are added in file 26urwfnt.zip (previously uploaded). However,
gs261ini.zip contains the uglyr font which will automatically
substitude for missing fonts, so the use of other fonts is optional.
Also using using only the ugly font minimizes the potential for
out-of-memory due to using too many fonts in non-386 versions of the
program.
Type gs -h for help and a list of the supported drivers.
Read use.doc in gs261ini.zip for instructions. Try gs use.ps
> foo or gs386 use.ps > foo to view use.doc in postscript form.
If you have usenet access, read gnu.ghostscript.bug for
bulletin board postings about ghostscript.
Type gs yourfile.ps > foo to redirect errors into file foo to
avoid error messages being printed on screen over the graphics image.
Happy computing... Nate Liskov (nate@lcs.mit.edu)
Many thanks to ghostscript author, Peter Deutsch.

Ghostscript 2.6 is now released. The main purpose of this release is to
provide a "platform font" capability, which allows Ghostscript to use the
fonts and the text display facilities of the underlying window and
graphics system. Under X Windows, Ghostscript will use X fonts; under MS
Windows, Ghostscript will use TrueType fonts and/or ATM fonts.
(Ghostscript does still need Type 1 scalable fonts for more exotic
situations, such as rotated or skewed characters or clipping with a
character shape.) As usual, see readme.doc in the fileset for a somewhat
more detailed list; see the NEWS file for a very detailed list. Note that
only a subset of the available drivers and features are included in the PC
executables distributed as GNU software: read the individual makefiles to
find out which drivers and features are included in which executables.
A user has created a good previewer that runs under MS Windows, called
Ghostview for Windows. Please contact Russell Lang
(rjl@monu1.cc.monash.edu.au) for details. Please do not ask FSF or
Aladdin Enterprises about this.
Ghostscript 2.6 may be obtained from the usual GNU distribution points.
One good place to get it is ftp.cs.wisc.edu:/pub/X/ghostscript*2.6*. This
is a 24-hour-access site that allows anonymous FTP and is not heavily
loaded. Please note that Ghostscript 2.6 is compressed with FSF's gzip
program, not with compress.
The Ghostscript 2.6 fonts are the same as those of Ghostscript 2.5.2,
except for the addition of 4 fonts donated by URW for distribution with
the GNU License (Nimbus Sans L Regular, Nimbus Roman No9 L Regular, URW
Grotesk T Bold, and URW Antiqua T Regular Condensed).
Context diffs from Ghostscript 2.5.2 to 2.6 have been provided.
Ghostscript 2.5.2 has been left on-line; most prior versions have been
deleted, but the relevant diffs will be left on-line indefinitely.
The only planned future release of Ghostscript is version 3.0, scheduled
for December, which will include a full implementation of PostScript Level
2 facilities. It is likely that there will be one intermediate release
before then, but no dates or specifications have been set.
Suggestions for improvements to Ghostscript are always welcome. Please
send them to ghost@aladdin.com.
I would like to thank the many Ghostscript beta testers for their
assistance in getting Ghostscript 2.6 ready for release, and especially
Tim Theisen and Russell Lang, who contributed most of the new code for X
Windows and MS Windows respectively.
